He's always said that comedians shouldn't be concerned with their weight.

But has hanging out with the Hollywood set given Ricky Gervais a change of heart? The Reading-born funnyman looked like he'd embraced the LA keep fit obsession as he showed off a trimmer new look at the Toronto Film Festival. Ricky is reportedly down to a svelte 13 stone, having shed several pounds through a combination of diet and exercise.

He's in Canada to launch his big screen directorial debut The Invention Of Lying. Not only did he step behind the camera, he also co-wrote and starred in the film, which hits UK cinemas on October 2.

In it he plays Mark - a man who lives in a universe where everyone tells the truth. He turns everything upside down, however, by telling the world's first lie. It also stars Jennifer Garner and Rob Lowe, both of whom joined Ricky and his TV producer partner Jane Fallon at the Canadian premiere of the film.

On his reason for choosing Brothers & Sisters star Rob for the part of the film's baddie, Ricky says: "We needed a genetically perfect nemesis. Look at the jawline, it's ridiculous. It's like someone drew it. It's too sharp - it's perfect!" As for Jennifer's involvement in the project, Ricky credits that to her good manners. "She doesn't swear. I asked her [what] her favourite swear word [is] and she said 'rats'," he joked.
