Knight in shining armour Zach Galifianakis has saved his elderly friend from homelessness.Warm-hearted Zach, 43, bought his friend Elizabeth ‘Mimi’ Haist, 87 an apartment to save her from living on the streets.As well as buying his friend a one-bedroomed apartment, the Due Date star reportedly treated his pal of 18 years to some red carpet treatment, and invited her to be his plus one at The Hangover III premiere in Los Angeles.
"I'm looking forward to it, I like the excitement of it," said Mimi to the New York Daily News.Octogenarian Mimi is getting used to the A-list lifestyle, and has been Zach's plus one for The Hangover II and The Campaign’s film premieres. "If he's in town, he takes me. Otherwise he lets me take a friend," said Mimi. "I dress up nice and a friend helps me with my makeup. It's fun, not something I've ever dreamed I'd experience. The limo takes me home afterwards," she said.
Between Two Ferns star Zach isn't the only celebrity with a big heart. Fellow A-lister Reneé Zellweger furnished Mimi's apartment and still stocks up her cupboards."[Renee] furnished the apartment and makes sure that Mimi always has food in her fridge," said a source to the Daily Star.Zach and Mimi struck up an unlikely friendship when the actor used Fox laundromat where Mimi volunteered.Although Zach lost touch after his lucky break, he jumped to the rescue when he heard Mimi had fallen on hard times.The laundromat worker struggled to get by for years on end, scraping together tips to make enough money for a hot meal.Sleeping and working in the laundry parlour, Mimi first experienced homelessness at 55 when she left her adulterous husband.Mimi and the actor's touching friendship will be televised in an upcoming documentary entitled Queen Mimi.However, Mimi is not the only woman in Zach's life. The comedian quietly wed his long-term girlfriend, activist Quinn Lundberg, in Vancouver in August last year.
