The photogenic couple, who married in December 2010 and have a 15-month-old daughter India Rose, then happily posed for pictures together – Elsa, 37, looking breathtaking in a black jumpsuit with sheer sleeves, and Chris dapper in a grey pinstripe three-piece suit, with a sky blue shirt and black leather shoes.

Chris, who stars as the colourful British racing driver James Hunt in the film, was also supported at the premiere by his younger brother, Liam Hemsworth.

The 23-year-old Australian star jetted in from his home in LA to attend the screening and share in Chris' special night to the delight of those lining the red carpet – his on-off fiancée Miley Cyrus was not by his side.Madrid-born Elsa wasn’t the only Hollywood beauty lighting up the London event. The film’s leading lady Olivia Wilde looked flawless in a plunging black tuxedo jacket and matching cigarette trousers.

The 29-year-old, cast as James' first wife Suzy in the hotly-anticipated film, injected a pop of colour with bright red lipstick, and completed her glamorous look with stiletto heels and loose waves in her hair.

She wasn't the only guests daring to bare. Supermodel Naomi Campbell also attended the premiere in a plunging ensemble; a black mini dress with cutaway panels that showcased her world famous figure.

Rush, which was directed by Ron Howard, charts the rivalry between the late James Hunt and fellow driver Niki Lauda in 1976. Niki survived a catastrophic crash in Germany in the middle of the season which almost killed him. But weeks later he was back on the track challenging his English rival. While James passed away in June 1993, Niki was able to attend the premiere with his wife Birgit. German actor Daniel Bruhl, who portrays Niki in the film, was also there and joined fellow stars Chris and Olivia at the unveiling.

He said that making the film made him hooked to thrill of racing. "After one lap, I totally got the addiction because it's pure addiction," he said.

"The whole car vibrates through your body. I see totally why young guys want to becoming a race driver. "Chris agreed.

"It was great. I immediately understood the addiction these guys have with the sport and the incredible amount of power at your fingertips.

"He went on to liken Formula One champion James to one of his previous characters, Thor. "It's a little different and a little similar in odd ways," he said. "I guess playing a real-life character, there's a huge responsibility and weight on your shoulders to do that person justice…

"And I guess Thor, he's not a real person as such, but he had a huge following of people for 60 years who knew much more about him than I did. So in a way there were both daunting. "The great and the good of the racing world turned out in support of the film. Bernie Ecclestone attended, alongside his daughter Tamara Ecclestone and her husband Jay Rutland, as did Sir Jackie Stewart, Jenson Button, David Coulthard, as well as James Hunt’s widow Sarah and their two sons Freddie and Tom.

Formula One presenter Natalie Pinkham and model Poppy Delevingne were also at the screening of the film, which will be released in the UK and the US on 13 September.
