It's been five years to the day since Olly Murs first auditioned for The X Factor - and what a five years it has been.

Now one of Britain's best-loved pop acts, he has a string of number ones hits, chart-topping albums and sell-out tours under his belt.

On Tuesday he took to Twitter to remember where his incredible journey first started.

"Never forget 25th June!" Olly wrote to his 5.64 million followers. "Thanks @SimonCowell @TheXFactor for my chance back in 2009! So crazy what has happened #verysuperstitious" he wrote, referencing his audition song.

The 30-year-old then wrote directly to his fans thanking them for all their support."

Most importantly all you lot the fans for your continued love, support & cheekiness!! Never forget that! None of this is possible without you!x"

Olly signed off by sharing a video of his original audition on the sixth series of the show, performing for Simon Cowell, Cheryl Cole, Dannii Minogue and Louis Walsh. All four judges put him through to the next round, with Simon describing it "the easiest yes I've ever given."

Next to the clip, Olly wrote, "And here it is!! Cringing-ell."

Olly lost out in the final of The X Factor to Joe McElderry — but it certainly hasn't held him back.

His success lies in both his musical abilities, and his humility.

It was something his X Factor mentor Simon highlighted in 2012 when he took to Twitter to congratulate Olly on his fourth number one single, Troublemaker.

"Congratulations on your number one single today," he wrote. "You are a true star and a great guy. Proof success doesn't change you." Delighted Olly quickly replied, "Thanks Boss!!"
