Catherine Zeta-Jones joins the cast of Dad's Army

Catherine Zeta-Jones will star in a silver-screen remake of Second World War sitcom, Dad's Army.

The 45-year-old Welsh actress is set to play a journalist sent to the coastal town of Walmington-on-Sea to write about the efforts of the Home Guard volunteers.

Catherine, who rose to fame after starring in The Darling Buds of May, will join a stellar cast of British acting talent on the film.

Sir Tom Courtenay will play Corporal Jones, Sir Michael Gambon will star as Godfrey and Toby Jones will take the role of Captain Mainwaring, who was famously portrayed by Arthur Lowe in the original TV show.

Love Actually's Bill Nighy will play Sergeant Wilson while star of The InbetweenersBlake Harrison will play Ian Lavender's character Private Pike.

Danny Mays, Sarah Lancashire, Alison Steadman, Mark Gatiss and Annette Crosbie will all also star in the remake.

Filming for the already highly-anticipated movie begins in Yorkshire this month.

Dad's Army attracted 18 million viewers during its run between 1968 and 1977 and repeats of the show today are still enjoyed by roughly two million viewers.
