Jessica Chastain and Matthew McConaughey jump to Anne Hathaway's defence

October 29, 2014

Jessica Chastain defended co-star Anne Hathaway at the Interstellar press conference in London after reports of Anne's behaviour on set were mentioned. "Anne Hathaway is so nice and everyone who says things like that are bullies and they're mean ", said Oscar nominee Jessica.

She continued: "She's so nice, she's so talented, she's intelligent, generous, a beautiful person, and I hope to work with her again and again."

Anne quickly thanked Jessica, before calling out to the reporter: "that's so funny, I knew when you picked me out when I was sitting next to Jessica that there had to be somewhere you were going with that, but thank you so very much for that [Jessica], it was so kind."

Oscar winner Anne has been the subject of memes and think-pieces on why she is not a likable actress, but Matthew McConaughey, who takes the lead role of Coop in Christopher Nolan's sci-fi epic also jumped to Anne's defence. "It was my first time working with Anne, and I thoroughly enjoyed it", said Matthew.

Anne admitted in 2013 that she knew about the "hatha-haters" and that she was often the butt of many jokes. In a recent interview she discussed how it made her feel.

"What are we supposed to do—pretend like it didn't happen?" she said. "People treated me a certain way. But I've grown from it. This whole thing has made me a way more compassionate and loving person. And I don't feel sorry for myself. I was in crisis. Now I'd be fine. I really would be. I'd let it roll off my back, but at the time I was still partly Fantine. I was still identifying with being a victim."

Anne won her first Oscar in 2013 for Les Miserables, but revealed earlier in October that becoming famous messed her up "for a really long time."

"I didn't know how to do it; I didn't know how to engage with it; it stressed me out. And people would say, 'You just have to be yourself,' and I was like, 'But I don't know who that is yet!", she added.Interstellar is out on 7 November
