Nicole Kidman opens up on her 'hard' 2014 followjng death of father

December 9, 2014

Nicole Kidman has admitted that 2014 has been "really really really hard", following the death of her father and a year of hit-and-misses at the box office.

The star's father passed away in September in Singapore, following a fall, and the Australian actress's biopic Grace of Monaco failed to light up the box office earlier in the year.

"My family underwent a massive tragedy. So not my favourite year. But I try not to be ungrateful – I’m grateful to be alive", Nicole told reporters at a press conference for Paddington, which has topped the UK box office in recent weeks.

She added: "My whole career is always a roller-coaster."

I’m so random and spontaneous and unusual in my choices – I never expect anything."

In Paddington, Nicole plays the evil taxidermist, Millicent. "I was the kid that watched the Wizard of Oz and wanted to play the Wicked Witch", revealed Nicole, before adding that she hopes the film does well in her native country.

Nicole called her husband Keith Urban a "rock" during her difficult year

"I hope it does well in Australia because it’s a film that’s about something ... it’s a kid’s movie that has people in it. Real people. "Following the death of her father, Nicole thanked her fans across the globe for their outpouring of support and love, writing on Facebook: "We would just like to thank everyone for their love and prayers over these past couple of weeks."

We are all heartbroken but knowing we are in the hearts and thoughts of others is so comforting. Sending love, Nic and Keith xx."
