David Ryall, who played Elphias Doge in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows , has died at the age of 79. The actor, whose five-decade career spanned TV, film and theatre, passed away on Christmas Day.
Sherlock star Mark Gatiss led the tributes to David on Twitter, writing: "The great David Ryall left us on Christmas Day. A twinkling, brilliant, wonderful actor I was privileged to call a friend. RIP."
David's actress daughter Charlie Ryall thanked those who had sent their support on the social media site.
"Thank you to @Markgatiss and everyone who has sent kind words of love & encouragement about my Dad, the brilliant David Ryall," she tweeted.
"Please take a moment to remember his huge five-decade-spanning career outside of the more well-known TV & film," she added, acknowledging David's varied acting achievements. "Not just Harry Potter. Not that I don't love Harry Potter. I do, I do. But there's so much more."
David starred in TV shows including The Village, Our Girl and Trollied and films including The League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse and Around the World in 80 Days.
