James Corden talks fatherhood and new film Into the Woods

January 8, 2015

James Corden has revealed that as a father-of-two, he can relate to his on-screen character The Baker in his latest film Into The Woods. James was making the comparison at a London press conference for the movie, which sees the actor star alongside Meryl Streep, Anna Kendrick and Emily Blunt among others. As the protagonist, James plays a childless baker in the Brothers Grimm fairy tale-inspired film. He and his wife, played by Emily, have been longing to start a family for years and set out to achieve their dream. "I thought, 'I understand who this man is,'" said James, when asked how he knew the role was for him. "I understand that he is representing the audience.

James Corden said he had the same fatherhood worries as his character in Into the Woods

"He is an every man who is worried about the things that I've been worried about in my life – when you're having a baby, thinking 'Can I do this? Is this something I'm capable of?' And then he suddenly becomes this hero at the end and I love it."

James Corden and his wife Julia Carey are parents to a son and daughter

The comedian, who admitted that he doesn't read many fairytales to his three-year-old as he finds them quite "scary", will be relocating to Los Angeles to host the The Late Late Show on CBS, replacing Scotsman Craig Ferguson. Joking about how he will have to convince his young son about the move, James said: "[Julia and I] are currently reading a book about Babar's American adventure and when he gets to LA, we go to my son... 'Amazing!'"

Anna Kendrick and James Corden attended the London press conference

At the conference, director Rob Marshall praised the actor for his performance in the musical film, as well as Tony Award-nominee Anna, who also attended. "It was clear that they were meant for these roles," said Rob, the man who helmed Chicago and Pirates of the Caribbean. "I love it when actors say this is mine." Rob added: "I knew James was a brilliant comedian but I had no idea that he had this amazing voice and had such depth and vulnerability as an actor. His range is pretty extraordinary and it was obvious to me that this is The Baker. "Anna brought such depth, vulnerability and complexity to her role as Cinderella, in addition to her humour and her extraordinary voice."
