Joanne Froggatt hails Globe win as 'most shocking moment of my life'

January 12, 2015

Downton Abbey star Joanne Froggart was one of the first stars to pick up a Golden Globe, winning the gong for Best Supporting Actress in a TV role for her role as maid Anna in the BBC drama. The British actress described the win as “the most shocking moment” of her life.

As she accepted her trophy, the Yorkshire-born actress expressed her gratitude. "Thank you to the most amazing cast and crew, my agent and my husband I wouldn't be here without you," said the star, who wed her long-time boyfriend James Cannon in 2012.

Joanne, 34, who had donned a strapless black dress embroidered with roses, has been the subject of many hard-hitting storylines, including the rape of her character. "After the storyline aired I received a lot of letters from survivors of rape - thank you to everyone who wrote - I heard you," she said. Other early winners included Gina Rodriguez, who beat the likes of Edie Falco and Julia Louise-Dreyfus to take home the award for Best Actress in a Comedy Show.

The Jane the Virgin star seemed visibly emotional as she accepted her gong. "Thank you to my entire cast. I am nothing without you," she said. "Thank you to my mom and my dad who tell me to dream big and never stop dreaming. Thank you to my sisters and my siblings...for being the biggest role models. "This award is so much more than myself," she said, getting tearful. "It represents a culture that wants to see themselves as heroes. My father used to tell me to say every morning: ‘Today is going to be a great day. I can and I will.' Well, Dad. Today is a great day. I can and I did."
