Kevin was born in Lynwood, California to welfare worker Sharon and electrician William Costner. While he described himself as not being academically inclined, Kevin went on to earn a BA in marketing and finance from California State University, where he was part of the fraternity, Delta Chi.
Kevin fell into acting after a chance meeting with Richard Burton, who encouraged him to take classes alongside his marketing job with the support of his then-wife Cindy.
After making a name for himself in Dancing With Wolves, for which he won both an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Director, he went on the star in films including: The Bodygaurd, JFK and A Perfect World and has more recently starred in TV show Hatfields & McCoys.
Kevin has seven children: Annie, Lily, Joe, Liam, Cayden, Hayes and Grace.
