Jimmy Fallon stages Saved by the Bell reunion: watch video

February 5, 2015

Jimmy Fallon took viewers back to the Nineties by staging a much-appreciated Saved by the Bell reunion. The comedian played himself as a new character at Bayside High, and dedicated an entire slot on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon for the skit.

The star was joined by members of the original cast who all managed to pull off the eight-minute sketch to perfection – 25 years after the sitcom first aired.

Jimmy and Mark-Paul Gosselaar, who played head cutie Zach, are the first to appear on set. Zach immediately has the audience in stitches when he tells Jimmy how his day is going – by recounting the lyrics to the popular Saved by the Bell theme tune.

Kelly, played by Tiffani Thiessen, surprises Zach (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) with her pregnancy

"Well, I woke up in the morning, the alarm gave out a warning, and I didn't think I'd ever make it on time," says Zach. "By the time I grabbed my books and I gave myself a look, I was at the corner just in time to see the bus fly by."

The pair are soon joined by lovebirds Slater (Mario Lopez) and Jessie (Elizabeth Berkley) who talk about the upcoming Valentine's Dance. When asked about whether he is ready for the party, Slater replies to Jessie: "You kidding mamma? I was born ready."

Slater then rips off his jeans and shirt to reveal a black leotard and leggings, and does a little dance routine, poking fun at his ballet skills.

Alluding to his future career as a successful chat show host, Jimmy reveals that he won't be making the dance as he's "moving to New York to be a comedian".

"I love it here but I want to be on Saturday Night Live and host my own talk show," says Jimmy, who featured on the weekend show from 1998 to 2004. "And who knows, maybe one day, date Nicole Kidman."

The Saved by the Bell reunion featured cameos from returning characters Zach, Kelly, Jessie and Slater

It's not long before Mr Belding (Dennis Haskins) turns up on the scene with his famous line, "Hey, hey, hey, what is going on here?" when he sees Jimmy and Jessie embracing at the sad news.

Zach's girlfriend Kelly (Tiffani Thiessen) also arrives with a surprise, throwing down her cheerleading pom poms to reveal a growing baby bump. "Listen you and I have to talk," she says to Zach. "I'm pregnant."

"Kelly that's great," he replies enthusiastically. "I love you and I'll always love you. We should run off to Las Vegas and get married." The high school sweethearts ended up doing just that in spin-off film Saved by the Bell: Wedding in Las Vegas after the series ended.

The skit finishes with a song playing over the loudspeaker. "Hey guys, friends forever," says Jimmy as he rallies the group around for a high-five. "Friends forever!" they cry in unison.
