He added: "Thanks to my three-year-old daughter's sleeping pattern, I've been waking up at four am for quite a while now. So the early starts shouldn't present any problem."

Piers also announced the news to his 4.4 million followers on Twitter, adding in the line: "So you will all get to wake up with me, you lucky devils."

He followed up his message with several others posts he had retweeted, one of which was from Lord Sugar. The business magnate, who has long enjoyed a war of words with Piers, had written: "Bloody hell, enough to make you pull the bed covers over your head and depress you for the day ahead."

Given that Piers will be guest presenting in mid-April – around the time of the Duchess of Cambridge's due dateHELLO! magazine's editor Rosie Nixon tweeted: "Will royal baby drop while you're on the job, Piers?"

"Yes," the TV star replied.

Piers, whose US show Piers Morgan Live was cancelled in 2014 after three years, also joked that he was fit to replace the newly fired Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear. "This doesn't prevent me doing Top Gear as well, obviously," he tweeted.

The confident journalist followed up his news with another amusing post. "General reaction to my @GMB hosting gig announcement appears to be 'Oh God!' Please everyone, 'Piers' is fine," he wrote, making reference to the public response.
