April 14, 2015

Great British Bake Off host Sue Perkins has revealed that she is taking a break from Twitter, after receiving numerous death threats. The threats came after Sue became bookies' favourite to replace Jeremy Clarkson on BBC show Top Gear. "Guys, post the utterly fabricated story about me & Top Gear, my timeline has been full of blokes wishing me dead..." Sue tweeted on Tuesday morning.

She went into details, adding: "This morning, someone suggested they'd like to see me burn to death."

The 45-year-old popular TV presenter then signed off, writing: "All of which goes to say that I am off Twitter for a bit. Love and peace x"

Sue denied reports that she would be taking on the role of presenting Top Gear in a reply to Twitter fans on Friday. Long term host Jeremy Clarkson was dropped following a fracas with a TV producer, and Sue quickly became odds favourite to replace Jeremy, followed by Dermot O'Leary and Jodie Kidd.

Mel and Sue have been presenting together since the 1990s

Jodie has previously admitted she would be up for the job. "Why not? Yes!" she told the Mirror, before joking, "I'm sure we can get two people to sign a petition."

The 36-year-old is a big motor racing fan – she has taken part in several rallies of the Gumball 3000 and previously held the record for the fastest celebrity lap in the popular Top Gear feature, Star In A Reasonably Priced Car.

Sue and her presenting partner Mel Giedroyc have hosted the hit BBC baking show Great British Bake Off since its inception in 2010. Their rapport has helped to make the show become a ratings smash, and allowed it to move to primetime BBC One in 2014.
