Chris Evans reveals he is 'thrilled' to be confirmed as the new presenter of Top Gear

June 16, 2015

After months of speculation, the BBC have confirmed that Chris Evans will be the new host of the hugely successful motor programme Top Gear. "I’m thrilled, " said Chris in a statement made via the BBC.

"Top Gear is my favourite programme of all time.

"Created by a host of brilliant minds who love cars and understand how to make the massively complicated come across as fun, devil-may-care and effortless. When in fact of course, it’s anything but and that’s the genius of Top Gear's global success."

Chris Evans is a self-confessed petrolhead

He added: "I promise I will do everything I possibly can to respect what has gone on before and take the show forward."

The news comes three months after Chris categorically ruled himself out of the running, shutting down reports that he was the hot favourite to take on the role. "Re @SkyNews Top Gear debate. I can categorically say I am not and will NEVER be running for office. Pls discount my candidacy," the 48-year-old tweeted.

Chris has reportedly signed a three-year deal to host the show, and he took to Twitter to ease fears that he may leave his BBC Radio 2 radio show.

"First tweet as new Top Gear host. I would like to say Jeremy, Richard & James are the greatest. And NO I'm not leaving the R2 Breakfast Show", he shared on the social media site.

Jeremy Clarkson admitted to Chris Evans in May his dismissal was his own fault

Formerly hosted by Jeremy Clarkson, the outspoken presenter was axed from the show in March after a fracas with a producer.

Speaking to Chris in May, Jeremy said he couldn't complain following his departure from the show, admitting that he was to blame for the incident.

"It was my own silly fault. I can't complain," he said. "I was at the BBC for 27 years, it was very much my baby, I worked on it all through the night and paid attention to it. You do feel there is a big hole which needs to be filled."
