Downton Abbey's glamorous stars hit the red carpet for BAFTA tribute

August 12, 2015

Downton Abbey cast members past and present gathered on Tuesday night to attend a special BAFTA tribute ceremony in London. Michelle Dockery, Lily James, Laura Carmichael and Hugh Bonneville were among the stars who graced the red carpet, while Dan Stevens, who was killed off in series three, also made a surprise appearance.

The cast were celebrating the six successful years of the hit ITV show, which will draw to a close in December.

Michelle, who plays Lady Mary Crawley, was the picture of elegance in a monochrome black and white dress. The brunette beauty teased her hair into side waves and completed her sleek look with a slick of red lipstick.

The 33-year-old actress was joined by Zac and Oliver Barker – the young twins who play her on-screen son George – who looked adorable in matching smart waistcoats.

Laura Carmichael, who plays Lady Edith Crawley, also opted for a full-length gown that featured a pretty floral pattern. She was pictured crouching down at one point with the gorgeous twin girls who play her on-screen daughter Marigold.

Laura Carmichael revealed that she appears in the very final scene of Downton

While few details have been released about the sixth and final series of Downton, Laura did reveal that she stars in the very final scene and that the camera closes on her. "It's very exciting," the 29-year-old told the BBC.

Lily James, who plays Lady Rose, added that viewers would "100 per cent" not be disappointed by the final series. "Reading the final episode I cried a lot – in a good way, happy tears," said Lily.

The 26-year-old Cinderella star wowed in a white dress, which she matched with quirky ivory heels adorned with pom poms.

Cast members from both upstairs and downstairs attended the ceremony hosted by Jonathan Ross, as well as past co-stars including Dan Stevens.

Dan played Matthew Crawley for the first three series before he was killed off in a car accident, leaving Lady Mary a widow. The London-born heart-throb, who has since gone on to star on Broadway opposite Jessica Chastain in The Heiress, proved a sight for sore eyes in a dark navy suit and bow tie.

Dan Stevens left Downton at the end of the third series

After winning three Golden Globes and 11 Emmy Awards, Downton will end this year. The final eight-part season will air in September and finish on Christmas Day.

"I think you want to finish when people are still a little bit sorry that it's over," creator Julian Fellowes told the BBC. "You don't want to wait until it's a huge relief all round. So I think we decided that at six, people would be sorry that there wasn't a seventh and that seemed right."

On the notion of a Downton Abbey movie, Julian added: "I'd like the idea of a film because of course with a film budget you could do things you can't do on television. You could open the whole thing up in a way that rather appeals to me. But you know, we'll have to see."
