Tom Jones expresses disappointment at The Voice axe

August 15, 2015

Tom Jones has said he is "shocked and disappointed" to have been axed from The Voice UK. The 75-year-old, who has starred as a coach in the first four series, said he was only informed of the news on Thursday - 24 hours before it was announced that he was being replaced by Boy George.

"Shocked and disappointed about The Voice UK," he wrote on Twitter. "I was TOLD yesterday. No idea, no conversation, no warning. To the fans, thank you for your last support over the last four years."

The Delilah singer's tweet linked through to a lengthy Facebook post, in which he explained that he had already cleared time in his schedule to participate in series five of the entertainment show. Sir Tom continued to describe the way the matter was handled by BBC executives as "very disappointing".

Sir Tom Jones said he was "shocked and disappointed" to have been axed

"About The Voice UK: In good faith, as part of the team, I'd put the time in my schedule to be involved in Series five, as I've done so for the last four years," he explained. "I've supported the show and the BBC since the beginning. I was told yesterday, with no consultation or conversation of any kind, that I would not be returning.

"Having been through plenty of transformations throughout the years, I support and admire creative change. But being informed, as a matter of duty and respect, is an important part of creative relationships. This sub-standard behaviour from the executives is very disappointing.

"I will always admire the courage of the performers who participate in the show, as well as all the production staff who worked tirelessly to make a great family viewing experience for the audience at home. I wish the show well."

It was announced on Friday that Sir Tom would not be returning to the show, with his seat on the coaching panel being taken by Boy George. Singer Paloma Faith was also announced as a new coach, taking over from Rita Ora.

New coach Boy George has said he is "thrilled" to be appearing on the show, while Paloma said she was "really excited" to be joining coaches Will.i.am and Ricky Wilson in the next series.
