Anne Hathaway tips Emily Blunt for Mary Poppins remake

September 23, 2015

Anne Hathaway may be the bookies' favourite to land the role of Mary Poppins in the upcoming remake of the Disney classic, but she doesn't fancy her chances. The Oscar-winner said she hasn't been involved in any discussions about the film, and instead suggested her friend Emily Blunt should get the part.

Robert DeNiro, Anne's co-star from The Intern, gave her his backing in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, explaining: "I saw them announce it on television and they mentioned Mary Poppins and I was thinking – I said, 'That's Annie'," adding that he thought she was a "terrific" pick.

Anne Hathaway doesn't think she'll get the Mary Poppins role

"Really?!" Anne responded. "Cool! No one's talked to me about it."

Anne has been given 6/4 odds to land the role by Irish betting agency BoyleSports, but she faces competition from actresses including her friend and The Devil Wears Prada co-star, Emily Blunt.

"I feel like she's going to get it – she's British," Anne said.

Meanwhile Emily has played down reports that she has already been offered the role, telling Digital Spy: "No, I've heard rumours of this and people have spoken to me about it today and there's not been anything official. I mean, she's an icon."

Anne tipped her former co-star Emily Blunt for the role

The new film will be set 20 years after Disney's original Mary Poppins, and will draw inspiration from all of P.L Travers eight book series, with Into the Woods director Rob Marshall already on board.

Anne could well prove a fitting choice for the role; she has already performed in a British accent in One Day, and also played Mary Poppins in a skit on Saturday Night Live.

The 32-year-old could also have the backing from her former The Princess Diaries co-star and the original Mary Poppins, Julie Andrews. The legendary actress previously described Anne as "a sweet girl, wonderful actress and singer," during an interview on The Talk in 2013.
