Coronation Street live: cast pull off flawless performance and viewer proposal

September 24, 2015

Triumphant Coronation Street stars were celebrating the success of the show's dramatic live episode in which drug dealer Callum Logan was killed off.

The resident bad boy – played by Sean Ward – had been holding Sarah Louise Platt Tina O'Brien hostage in her own living room, demanding that her brother David and his wife Kylie (Paula Lane) give him £20,000 blackmail money. Instead he was bludgeoned over the head by Kylie as he tried to strangle Sarah.

After the shocking episode Sean admitted he was "gutted" to leave Corrie, adding: "But at the same time it’s right for the character. I hope it was a big shock, you want viewers to have a reaction to it....."

Samia Ghadie, who is on maternity leave awaiting the birth of her second child, congratulated her colleagues on Twitter, writing: "Amazing work guys.... so proud".

Lorraine Kelly wrote: "Just caught up with Corrie / big congrats to cast and crew. Great job."

Tina tweeted that she was "sore and bruised" from the fight scenes "but it was totally worth it". After two weeks of rehearsals the actress had to wear thick make up on her arms to cover up the marks when it come to the actual performance.

In the end there was only one tiny mistake when a microphone didn't come on, cutting out the sound for a few minutes.

Even EastEnders actor Adam Woodyatt was impressed, admitting he'd been hoping for a 'How's Adam' moment – a reference to his own soap's live show last year when a co-star called his character Ian Beale by his real name.

He tweeted: "Well done to the cast & crew... I'd been hoping someone was going to ask how I was."

Not only did Adam's rivals pull off a high-octane performance, they also managed to help one viewer to propose.

Twitter user @literallyadam contacted the show asking them to write a message on a chalkboard in the bar of the Rovers Return pub. The crew then wrote his out proposal so 17 million viewers could read "Katie Lowe, will you marry me?" Luckily, she said yes and the groom-to-be later tweeted: "I'm officially engaged, thanks @itvcorrie what a night!!"
