November 3, 2015

The BBC has re-commissioned drama Doctor Foster following the unprecedented success of the first series. The drama series, which focuses on the story of an unravelling marriage, proved incredibly popular with the finale drawing in a consolidated audience of 10.1 million viewers.

Suranne Jones takes the lead as Gemma, a GP who discovers her husband has been unfaithful. The former Coronation Street star said the next series will focus on her character's new life after "divorce, deceit and revenge" as she expressed her excitement at resuming the role.

"I am thrilled to announce we will all be reunited to tell Gemma's next chapter," Suranne said. "I can't wait for the audience who invested in these characters to find out the explosive twists and turns. Now we can look into what happens to a woman after divorce, deceit and revenge has taken its toll."

Meanwhile Mark Bartlett, the writer and creator of the drama series, said he had been "astounded" by the reception it had received.

He said: "We're now going to tell the next chapter in Gemma's story. Her life in Parminster may look better on the surface, but as she will discover to her cost, every action has its consequences eventually. No one comes through hell unscathed."

Doctor Foster aired on the BBC for a five-episode series culminating in October. The show attracted an average weekly audience of 8.2 million viewers – the highest rating for any new television drama in 2015.

Lead actress Suranne appears to be in demand, as it has also been announced that she will film a three-part special of Scott & Bailey to air on ITV in 2016. The 37-year-old is enjoying an incredible year that has also seen her marry her partner Laurence Akers in an intimate ceremony in August, following a whirlwind romance.
