The Great British Bake Off has risen to success and dominated the TV ratings in 2015. More than 15 million people tuned in to watch Nadiya Hussain become crowned the Bake Off champion in October, with the increasingly popular show also taking third to eighth place on the top 40 most-watched shows of the year.

Its closest rival was Britain's Got Talent, which attracted 12.75 million viewers for its grand finale at the end of May. Meanwhile Strictly Come Dancing came in ninth position with 11.93 million viewers for the quarter-finals on 5 December.

Other BBC shows to make the top 40 most-watched shows include EastEnders, Call the Midwife and Doctor Foster, which was the highest entry by a new programme.

While Simon Cowell may be disheartened to see that The X Factor didn't make the list, his other show Britain's Got Talent does make seven appearances within the top 40 list, after securing 11.25 million or more viewers on a number of occasions during its ninth year on ITV.
