Kate Winslet brings girl power to the Golden Globes: 'What a year for women in film'

Kate Winslet brought some girl power to the Golden Globes with an emotional acceptance speech praising her fellow nominees. The actress said she felt "prouder than ever" as she collected the Best Actress in a Supporting Role award for her performance in Steve Jobs.

Taking to the podium, Kate expressed her shock at winning in such a strong category, which saw her face competition from up-and-coming star Alicia Vikander, Helen Mirren, Jane Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Kate Winslet praised her fellow nominees

"I just want to say, what an incredible year for women in film, and I mean, these categories are so crowded and crammed with incredible skill and integrity and I feel prouder than ever this year to be included I really truly do," Kate said.

She reiterated the message backstage in the press room, telling reporters: "There's a real sense of girl power this year in terms of performances."

Kate also took the opportunity to thank some of the leading men in her life including her Steve Jobs co-star Michael Fassbender, director Danny Boyle, and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin before giving a special mention to her husband Ned RocknRoll who sat proudly in the audience.

Kate won the Best Supporting Actress award

"My wonderful husband Ned, my everything, you make it all possible. Thanks for always being up for the adventure," Kate said.

Kate is no stranger to awards season success, and has previously won three Golden Globe awards and a further seven nominations. The 40-year-old looks set to have a memorable awards season as she is nominated for similar awards at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the BAFTAs and the Critics' Choice Awards. It is expected that she may also receive an Oscar nomination for her performance in the biopic, which is based on Apple co-founder Steve Jobs' life.
