Eddie Redmayne stars as Newt Scamander in the film

The new film is based on the author's 2001 book of the same name, which is set in the Harry Potter universe and is the first in a planned trilogy. The clip shows Newt Scamander – played by Eddie – embarking on a journey from his native Britain to New York, where he discovers an entire secret community of wizards and witches. It also gives fans their first look at Colin Farrell in character as Percival Graves.

The suitcase plays an important part in the movie

"You're an interesting man, Mr Scamander," he can be heard telling the protagonist. "Just like your suitcase, I think there's much more to you than meets the eye," he adds, as a tiny pair of clawed hands can be seen prising open the luggage from the inside.

Those familiar with the book will already be aware that the suitcase plays a major role in the plot. It contains a number of magical creatures that manage to escape and cause chaos between the wizarding community and the No-Maj (non-magical people).

"Kicked out of Hogwarts for endangering human life with a beast," Colin's character continues. "Yet one of your teachers argued strongly against your expulsion. I wonder what makes Albus Dumbledore so fond of you, Mr Scamander?"The film is set in 1926 – 30 years before Dumbledore became headmaster at Hogwarts, and 54 years before the birth of Harry Potter.

Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them is set for release on 18 November.
