Alicia Vikander or Daisy Ridley: who is the new Tomb Raider?

April 29, 2016

Speculation has been rife about which young actress will step into Angelina Jolie's shoes to play the role of tough action heroine Lara Croft in the new Tomb Raider movie.

Although many names have put forward to be playing the titular character, Alicia Vikander and Daisy Ridley have been the main contenders for the starring role.

Although it seemed that the Star Wars actress would be taking on the role, it has finally been announced that Swedish actress Alicia will be playing Lara Croft in the film for MGM, Warner Bros. and GK Films.

It has been confirmed that Alicia will play Lara Croft in the series reboot

The star has had quite the year after winning Best Supporting Actress at the Academy Awards for her role in The Danish Girl and receiving critical acclaim for her role in the sci fi thriller Ex Machina.

Fans were quick to praise the casting choice, with one writing on Twitter: "Alicia Vikander: Tomb Raider sounds like a perfect film. Who needs Lara Croft?", while another tweeted: "I'm sure Alicia Vikander will make a very cool Lara Croft, can't wait to see how she interprets the role. #tombraider #laracroft."

The star won an Oscar for her role in The Danish Role

This will be the first Lara Croft movie since Angelina Jolie starred in 2001's Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and 2003's Lara Croft: Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life. However, the producer of the reboot, Dan Lin, has confirmed that the next instalment to the franchise will be an origin story.

He told About.com: "Yeah, we're rebooting Lara Croft as well. Really excited - it's a great origin story that we're going to tell. A very character-oriented I would say, more realistic than the past Lara Croft movies.

"I would say it's like Terminator - character-driven action. I think for me the Lara Croft games and movies have gone a little too action-oriented. I wanted to have action, but with character."
