The trailer shows scenes from the beaches of Dunkirk from World War I, from bodies lying still on the sand to soldiers being transported onto the shore while a clock ticks ominously in the background. The trailer hints at the film's plot, saying: "At the point of crisis, at the point of annihilation, survival is victory."

Fans were quick to praise the look of the film, which was written, directed and produced by Interstellar director Christopher Nolan, with Doctor Who star Karen Gillan writing: "Woah that last shot in the Dunkirk trailer was incredible," while another fan wrote: "The Dunkirk trailer deserves to be seen on the big screen with surround sound. Unbelievable how immersed you can get in a minute."

However, fans of One Direction star Harry Styles, who was snapped on the set of the war film in July, have expressed their disappointment that the 22-year-old doesn't appear in the video. One fan photoshopped a photo of Harry's face in a screenshot of the trailer, writing: "Y'all I found Harry," while another joked: "Me and my boyfriend are both excited to see Dunkirk for totally different reasons."

Mark Rylance, who is Harry's co-star in the upcoming picture, has already praised the star for his acting skills. He said: "He seems remarkable ... one of those people - Sean Penn has it too - a kind of panache. I look at them and think, 'How did you get that? How do you get so that life is easy?' But he has got a lovely, lovely character. It's a gift."
