August 29, 2016

Luther star Idris Elba has hinted that the much-loved BBC detective series may well be back for a fifth season. The 43-year-old was answering questions on Twitter when he suggested there may be new episodes on the way, sending fans into a frenzy.

When a fan asked: "what's the chance of a new series of Luther?" the Beasts of No Nation actor teased his response, saying: "Big chance. Watch this space," accompanied by a sunglasses emoji.

Idris suggested Luther will be returning for a fifth season

Fans immediately responded excitedly to the news, with one writing: "Now that has made my bank holiday happy," while another wrote: "this made my year!!! Please we need more!!!"

In the show, Idris plays John Luther, a brilliant detective who gets results despite his controversial methods as he investigates murder cases while developing a strange relationship with genius psychopath, Alice (Ruth Wilson).

The show's creator Neil Cross previously revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly how difficult it was to find time for the show with Idris's hectic timetable, saying: "Not because we don’t all love it but the timing — Idris is a star of some considerable stature and it just began to look impractical that we would ever be able to make any more."

The star has starred in four seasons of the crime show

The show has had a passionate fan base since its series premiere back in 2010, though there has no word of a new season since its two-episode special season four aired back in December last year.

Idris's hint that he may be filming a new series of Luther seems to confirm that the star will not be playing the new James Bond, despite the huge popularity for him to become the new 007.

The star admitted he thought himself "too old" to play the role, telling the hosts on Good Morning America: "If I'm really honest, man, I think I'm too old for that, I can't be running around in cars and ladies and martinis – who wants to do that? It sounds terrible!"
