Following the success of War & Peace and Poldark, the BBC are gearing up for a new period drama, To Walk Invisible. The one-off, two hour production will give an extraordinary insight into the lives of the Brontë sisters, who, despite the obstacles they faced, came from obscurity to produce some of the greatest novels in the English language.

Charlotte Brontë famously penned romantic novel Jane Eyre, while Emily was best known for Wuthering Heights and Anne for The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. Emily, will be played by An Inspector Calls actress Chloe Pirrie. She will be joined by Finn Atkins as her deeply ambitious older sister Charlotte, and Charlie Murphy as the determined, level-headed younger sister Anne.

Speaking about the drama, writer and director Sally Wainwright said: "This is such an exciting and ambitious project, and we have already had a huge amount of interest in it. Something about the lives of these three brilliant, talented Yorkshire women seems to touch people at a very deep level.

"I am honoured that the BBC have asked me to bring to life this fascinating family in a story set in the heart of West Yorkshire. We have a wonderful cast and I am delighted to be working alongside Karen Lewis (producer) again, and with Faith Penhale."

Meanwhile, Game Of Thrones actor Jonathan Pryce will be taking on the role of the Brontë sisters' father Patrick. Sharing his excitement over the drama, he said: "I am such an admirer of Sally Wainwright that if she were filming the phone book I would want to be in it! Her film will be a characteristically honest look at the whole Brontë family. I am really looking forward to it."

To Walk Invisible will air on BBC One on Thursday 29 December at 9pm
