Crystal Maze is back! Channel 4 has confirmed the commission of a brand new series of the hit show - and with it comes a brand new host. On Friday morning, it was announced British comedian Richard Ayoade will be bringing his charm as the new Maze Master, taking over from past hosts Richard O'Brien and Ed Tudor-Pole.

It's been 21 years since the adventure game show aired on screens. The series, which originally aired from 1990 to 1995, returned to Channel 4 in October 2016 for a Stand Up To Cancer celebrity special, which proved to be a huge success after gaining an audience of 4.3 million viewers.

Richard Ayoade has been announced as the new host of Crystal Maze

The format of Crystal Maze will remain largely the same - with teams of five contestants pulling out all the stops to navigate the maze. They will face a range of skill, mystery and physical challenges in a bid to win crystals that equate to time in the final test - the legendary Crystal Dome.

Filming will take place at a purpose-built maze - spanning over 30,000 feet - in Bristol, devised by original designer James Dillon. The 20 hour-long episodes will also feature celebrity specials throughout the series.

Channel 4's Head of Live & Events Tom Beck said: "The Stand Up To Cancer special was so brilliant and so successful that commissioning a series of The Crystal Maze was almost a no-brainer. And I couldn't be more pleased and excited that Richard has agreed to become the new Maze Master - he's an inspired choice."
