The very first trailer for series three of Broadchurch has finally been released. The short teaser sees the return of David Tennant and Olivia Colman’s detectives Alec Hardy and Ellie Miller as they are called in to investigate a new crime – this time a brutal sexual assault at a party. And the season promises to be the best one yet, with a host of new stars joining the cast, alongside familiar faces including Jodie Whittaker, Andrew Buchan and Arthur Darvill.

Among those making their Broadchurch debut are Lenny Henry, Sarah Parish and Coronation Street’s Julie Hesmondhalgh, who appeared in the first official image from season three.

The new series of the award-winning ITV drama is set to premiere in February, much to the delight of fans. Arthur, who plays Reverend Paul Coates, recently revealed that the show’s third run will be much more like the critically-acclaimed first series.

"This series, I think, is going to be brilliant," he told Digital Spy. "I can’t tell you too much about it, but the subject matter of it is really heavy. I loved the second series of Broadchurch – I think it was really necessary to tell that part of the story - but I think this series has more of the feel of the first series."

The series is returning for a third and final series

Writer Chris Chiball, meanwhile, has confirmed this will be Broadchurch’s "final chapter". He said: "We have one last story to tell, featuring both familiar faces and new characters. I hope it's a compelling and emotional farewell to a world and a show that means so much to me."
