The first trailer for Stephen King's It is here and it promises to be a terrifying adaptation of the 1986 horror novel. The story, which was originally made into a mini-series back in 1990, follows a group of children who are hunted by a terrifying clown, who will be played by Bill Skarsgård for the upcoming movie. The trailer shows a young boy trying to find his paper boat after it falls down a drain, only to come face-to-face with a clown hiding in the sewer. A character then explains that people regularly go missing in their town in a voiceover. "Derry's not like any town I've ever been in before," he says. "People die or disappear six times the national average. And that's just the grown-ups. Kids are worse. Way worse."

The trailer gave fans a terrifying insight into the upcoming film, including a slideshow of photographs in which the clown appears. The final moments of the trailer are possibly the most terrifying, as Bill's younger brother Georgie tells him: "Bill! If you come with me you'll float too," repeating the phrase over and over again. Fans were quick to discuss the trailer, with one writing: "That 'slide' image in the IT trailer just did me in. Oh no no no no no." Another added: "I was dubious but after seeing the first trailer I am VERY excited for 'IT'."

The director of the adaptation, Andrés Muschietti, revealed that he kept Bill away from the child actors before filming so they would experience the full effect of his terrifying costume. "The day that [Pennywise] showed up on the stage, they… freaked out," he admitted. "Bill is like, seven-foot high, and I can't describe how scary he looks in person. He's a wiry man, crouching, making sounds, snotting, drooling, speaking in Swedish sometimes. Terrifying."
