Coronation Street are set to lose popular character Gary Windass in dramatic upcoming scenes following a nine year reign in the ITV soap. According the The Sun, the popular character will be "killed off" in an almighty car explosion, leaving his family and friends devastated. Gary will die off screen after returning to Ukraine, a source told The Sun. The insider said: "Gary's family are devastated after they're told of his tragic death.Gary's mum Anna is told that he was killed driving a diplomat whose car was ambushed, blown up and there are "no survivors". Sarah is inconsolable when she's told of his passing and everyone is desperate for more information from the foreign office to find out exactly what's happened."

The ITV soap promises to keep viewers on the edges of their seats over the next few months, with a shock kidnap set to cause yet more distress to the Platt family. Shona Ramsay is threated by a man called Dane, who turns up to the Bistro demanding money from her. After she tells them to go away, Dane is then seen climbing into the car, with David's two young children Max and Lily inside.

A clip from the trailer shows Gary's mum Anna in a fight with the builder, which ends with her lying on the floor as Pat presents a gun. With actress Debbie Rush set to leave the show, viewers will be left wondering whether she makes it out alive, or will she be leaving as a result of the loss of her son?
