Midsomer Murders star Neil Dudgeon, who plays DCI John Barnaby in the hit show, has opened up about how filming alongside his castmate, Nick Hendrix, can get out of control. Chatting to the Express.co.uk, Neil explained that he and Nick will always get the giggles during filming, and will often have to wait a few minutes to compose themselves before being able to do a real take.

He explained: "Nick is a terrible giggler, so once he starts you’ve got a few minutes of waiting for him to get back under control because he can get quite giggly. But I have to confess I’m a bit like that myself so we have to try and ration the points at which we both lose it."

He continued: "If we both lose it at the same time then it takes ten or 15 minutes so we have to help each other control ourselves." He added that his former co-star, Jason Hughes, was just as bad for causing havoc on set.

"Jason was quite like that as well," he said. "You get a few of those now and again, it’s important an actor is relaxed and is bonding with his fellow actors."

Neil took over the lead role on the show from John Nettles back in 2011. Speaking about his decision to leave, John told The Telegraph: "I suddenly realised that I'm going to be the oldest detective in the business now that David Jason has thrown off the mantle. But it was a very difficult decision to make. I'll have been doing Midsomer Murders for 14 years by the time Barnaby leaves. I've formed familial ties with the people involved in the show and they will be hard to break."
