Netflix's The Crown announce major change to future of show

Fans are thrilled with the change!

Netflix have announced a major change regarding the future of popular series The Crown. The drama, which stars Olivia Colman and Tobias Menzies as Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip, will in fact run for six season, contrary to the previously planned five.

The streaming giant confirmed the exciting change on its official Twitter page on Thursday afternoon with a series of tweets. They wrote: "News from the palace: we can confirm there will be a sixth (and final) season of @TheCrownNetflix, in addition to the previously announced five!"

The statement continued: "Writer/creator Peter Morgan: 'As we started to discuss the storylines for Series 5, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons.' So to summarise – we'll have one more season with Queen Olivia Colman, before she passes the crown to Imelda Staunton. We're just half way through! Lovely."

Fans of the show were keen to share their joy at the prospect of more royal drama in the form the Netflix show, which starred Claire Foy and Matt Smith as the leading monarchs for the first two seasons. One person wrote: "Omg. Don't. DON'T. I am too excited. This is the best news ever. Currently going wild." While another said: "Lovely news to see after such a meh day!"

A third, however, was pleased with the news but was quick to remember the time taken for previous series to arrive on the streaming platform. They wrote: "Based on track record, I estimate season 6 will be released in the year 2024 or 2025 #bittersweet."

Imelda will take over from Olivia for series five and six

The latest series is the third in the franchise and the first to see a change of cast. Olivia and Tobias will continue their roles into the fourth series. However, come series five and six, Imelda Staunton will be taking over to play the monarch. Imelda confirmed that she would be playing the Queen back in January, stating: "I have loved watching The Crown from the very start. As an actor it was a joy to see how both Claire Foy and Olivia Colman brought something special and unique to Peter Morgan's scripts. I am genuinely honoured to be joining such an exceptional creative team and to be taking The Crown to its conclusion."
