Call the Midwife confirm exciting news - and fans cannot wait!

The BBC period drama is returning very soon!

Call the Midwife has delighted fans after sharing quite the important filming update - the completion of this year's Christmas special! After lockdown restrictions were put in place, filming grounded to a halt and caused delays to the productions.

To mark the end of the festive episode, the official Instagram account for the BBC drama released this statement, which read: "NEWS!! Call the Midwife completes filming on its new Christmas Special!!

"Today we passed an important milestone that we wanted to share with you all - we have completed all of our filming for the new Christmas Episode!"

Sharing a picture of the clapperboard with cast members Leonie Elliott and Zephryn Taitte, the message continued: "It's a tradition in filming to take a picture of the first and last clapperboards used, along with the actors who are involved in that scene. Today it's the turn of our lovely Leonie Elliot (Lucille), with her screen partner the brilliant Zephryn Taitte (Cyril)!"

Normally, the Call the Midwife team would wait to do their final clapperboard shot until the whole of filming for the upcoming series was complete – however, they thought this milestone moment should be marked regardless.

"Although there is still much post-production work to do on the episode – editing, sound, music, etc – these jobs are much easier to do under any distancing restrictions," they added. "So we can once again assure you that we really WILL be seeing you at Christmas!!

Call the Midwife producers shared this behind-the-scenes snap

"The Christmas episode is very important to us. It's our personal gift to you all – a sign that, like the festival itself, all the most important things in life remain true and constant, regardless of the uncertainties of a changing world."

They concluded: "Love. Family. Hope. Care. Compassion. Community. As central to the message of the season as they are to our drama. Xx And next? Straight on with series 10!! Xx."

Fans rushed to react to the exciting news, with one writing: "Something to look forward to." Another remarked: "I'm so excited. Can't wait to watch. Hurry up Christmas." A third post read: "Wow guys well done to all."

The popular show will be back for Christmas

As well as the Christmas special, viewers can expect the new episodes of the tenth series to arrive in early 2021. The writers and crew have previously spoken out about how determined they were to ensure we can enjoy the annual episode this year.

Teasing storyline details, the show producers told Radio Times: "This year's Christmas Special is set in December 1965. Everyone at Nonnatus House is looking forward to traditional celebrations with all the trimmings, but nothing goes quite to plan. Sister Monica Joan is rushed to hospital, and Trixie is incensed to receive a subscription to a Marriage Bureau as a Christmas gift."
