After much anticipation, Netflix released their adaptation of Rebecca starring Lily James and Armie Hammer. The film, which is based on the Daphne Du Maurier gothic novel of the same name, tells the story of a whirlwind romance between widower Maxim de Winter and his new wife, as secrets start to unfold. But it seems that the film has sparked a mixed reaction from viewers at home.

Many took to social media on the release of the title to give their verdict and some were left feeling disappointed with the adaptation.

One person wrote: "Daphne Du Maurier's #Rebecca should be read for sheer suspense created through words. The new Netflix version is beautifully shot and styled but is underwhelming. Lily James is wimpy but Kirsten Scott Thomas is amazing!"

A second person echoed this, comparing the latest version with previous releases and the original novel. They tweeted: "Netflix's new Rebecca adaptation despite all its glitz and glamour is flat. You will do a disservice to Daphne Du Maurier by watching it. Please watch the original Hitchcock version. Or maybe - read the book?"

However, others were more complimentary about the film. "Just finished the new @netflix version of #Rebecca. It's not Hitchcock, to be sure. What it is, without question, is a vibrant but haunting new take on a classic. Well worth a watch," commented one fan.

Another said: "I never saw Hitchcock's #Rebecca, nor did I read the book, maybe that is why I loved the @NetflixFilm version so much. I just don't get all the hate for this film! @netflix."

The official synopsis for the film reads: "After a whirlwind romance in Monte Carlo with handsome widower Maxim de Winter (Armie Hammer), a newly married young woman (Lily James) arrives at Manderley, her new husband's imposing family estate on a windswept English coast.

"Naive and inexperienced, she begins to settle into the trappings of her new life, but finds herself battling the shadow of Maxim’s first wife, the elegant and urbane Rebecca, whose haunting legacy is kept alive by Manderley's sinister housekeeper Mrs. Danvers (Kristin Scott Thomas)."
