Netflix released mini-series Barbarians earlier this month and it seems the historical drama has already proved so popular with users, the show is currently in the number one trending spot.

The six-part show, which is a dramatisation of the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, stars Laurence Rupp as Arminus, Jeanne Goursaud as Thusnelda and David Schütter as Folkwin Wolfspeer. But many are wondering if the show will return.

The series is hugely popular with viewers

But fans might be pleased to know an executive producer on the show, Sabine de Mardt, spoke to Variety earlier this month about the prospect of more episodes.

She explained: "We are delving into the very personal psychological conflicts of our main characters. Only some of which will be resolved in the first season, leaving plenty of material for seasons to come."

Several fans took to social media to give their review on the German series. One person tweeted: "Anyone else catch the Barbarians mini series on Netflix? Six episodes of pure pleasure. What a lovely little October surprise."

An executive producer on the show said there's plenty of material for more episodes

A second person wrote: "I'm so damn impressed with that #Barbarians finale. What an exceptional battle sequence, the intensity and brutality. Easily the best episode of the show."

Meanwhile a third was keen for a second series, writing: "I need a Season 2 of #Barbarians because that was sehr, sehr gut! Brilliant even. Netflix been bringing some real nice stuff finally. I'd been waiting."

For those unfamiliar with the show, the official synopsis reads: "In the year 9 AD, several Germanic tribes unite to challenge the almost invincible Roman legions in a legendary battle: the battle in the Teutoburg Forest will change the history of Europe. At the centre of this bloody clash are three childhood friends who are linked by a tragic fate.

"They become the all-important force in the fight against the superior Roman power. Her path is marked by loyalty and betrayal, love and hate – and ultimately proves to be a dramatic test of a friendship between three young people."
