She said: "On New Year's Day I had a bit of a dip, and I think a number of people, particularly concerned about vulnerable, isolated lonely friends and relatives are worried about their children, because my goodness what are we doing to our children's education? I think some people might have felt a little bit gloomy yesterday evening after hearing what the Prime Minister had to say."

Speaking about staying positive despite the news, Dr Hilary replied: "This is a massive test of our national resilience, it really is. This is the biggest infectious disease crisis any of us have ever faced in our lifetimes. I think we need to stay strong.

"I think we need to look at the endgame rather than what's going on now, and we have to get through this. We have to think of every possible mechanism of staying positive."

Following the news on Monday night, Susanna tweeted: "New lockdown. Schools closed. Exams cancelled. Shielding reinstated. Starts now. Hold on tight everyone. Get that vaccine. We are in this together and we’ll get through this. But it’s going to be hard." She also retweeted a message which read: "It is ok to both realise a lockdown is needed to suppress COVID and protect health services, as well as despair at being in another lockdown."

Susanna opened up about feeling down on New Year's Day

While not at work, the presenter has been spending lockdown at home in Balham, south London with her three sons, Finn, Jack and Sam. She recently spoke about how her son Sam's education was affected by the lockdown after having his A-levels predicted.

Writing in her Daily Mail column, she explained: "As a mum, it was heartbreaking, even though my son was lucky. I had friends WhatsApp me in desperation over their tearful children."
