He added: "That was an idea she had, 'Why don't we get married out here?' I was like, 'Because I'm busy trying to film a TV show where I'm in every scene'."

Ralf then joked: "She said, 'OK, maybe next year.' That's why I organised the pandemic, to make sure I had an excuse to put it down the line."

Ralf, 40, is engaged to playwright Lindsey Ferrentino. The couple are thought to have been together for three years after he landed a part in her play Ugly Lies the Bone at the National Theatre.

The stage and screen star has been gearing up for the latest series of Death in Paradise, in which he has played the lead role since January 2020.

Ralf, who is also known for his parts in The Royle Family and Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, has been gearing up for Death in Paradise's return to BBC and opened up about what viewers can expect from the new episodes.

He told the BBC: "Neville finds himself confronted by this very beautiful, smart woman [Florence Cassell] who he's not quite sure how to talk to. She's incredibly kind and generous and they hit it off and seem to get on really well. Plus there are a few extra surprises for people to look forward to."
