Marcella returned last week on ITV with a bang. The Scandi-Noir inspired drama saw Anna Friel reprised her role as the troubled detective Marcella Backland – and this time with a brand new look and identity.

The third series comes after almost three years after the last, and many are wondering about the show's future.

Speaking to press ahead of the show's launch, the actress revealed whether fans could look forward to a fourth series: "It was always intended to be a trilogy, but the end of the third season is left very much open. I guess it depends on how much the viewers here like it."

The 44-year-old added: "It's been really well reviewed and respected in all the other counties that have been able to see it, I'm so sorry [the UK] had to wait so long. I think it [also] depends on everyone's availability. But it was intended to be a trilogy, there is a kind of satisfying end to series three as you'll see."

Meanwhile, viewers were loving last week's double bill, but some were left feeling a bit confused by the opening episodes. One person wrote on Twitter: "Twenty minutes in and I have no idea what's happening... welcome back #Marcella."

A third fan was pleased with the first two episodes, but added: "So I've just watched the first episode of #Marcella series three and if was as wonderfully brutal as I'd hoped... but I can't help but feel I've slept on series two in parts. Like I vividly remember the hair and the face and the necklace, but some of the recap did not ring a bell."
