You've probably heard a lot about Netflix film The Power of the Dog over the last few months due to the fact that it has scored a slew of nominations. And this weekend will determine whether the film has reigned champion at the 2022 Academy Awards.

The movie, helmed by Jane Campion who previously won the Best Director Oscar almost 20 years ago for 1993's The Piano, sees actor Benedict Cumberbatch take on the part of a rancher alongside other big names such as Kirsten Dunst.

What is The Power of the Dog about?
Based on the 1967 novel of the same name by Thomas Savage, The Power of the Dog tells the story of a cowboy named Phil Burbank, a rancher who falls in love with a boy named Peter, the son of a widow, Rose, who moved to the ranch Phil owns with his brother.
Rose and George meet at a restaurant and immediately fall in love and marry. But Phil soon realises his own feelings for the family.

The synopsis reads: "Charismatic rancher Phil Burbank inspires fear and awe in those around him. When his brother brings home a new wife and her son, Phil torments them until he finds himself exposed to the possibility of love."

Who stars in Netflix's The Power of the Dog?
As mentioned, Benedict Cumberbatch leads the cast of Western drama as the cruel lead character, Phil Burbank, who runs a ranch with his brother, George, played by Jesse Plemons. Both have received nominations in the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor category respectively at this year's BAFTAs.

Kirsten Dunst, who happens to be married to Jesse, will be playing the role of widow Rose Gordon who married George after moving her son, Peter, to the ranch. She has also received an Oscar nod.
Playing the part of Peter is Kodi Smit-McPhee, who will be going up co-star Jesse, in the battle to win Best Supporting Actor. Also appearing in the film are Thomas McKenzie, Frances Conroy, Adam Beach, Peter Carroll and more.

How can I watch The Power of the Dog?
While the film was briefly in cinemas back in November 2021, since 1 December 2021, it has been available to stream on Netflix.
For those wanting the big screen experience (complete with popcorn and reclining chairs!), there is the chance that the film will return for a limited time to cinemas due to the buzz around it. We recommend checking your local cinema listings for any screenings.
