"Congratulations!!! I loved this season so much," commented one fan as others used the beloved catchphrase themselves and some thanked Elle, writing: "I have never been happier!"

The dark dramedy follows the emergence of Catherine the Great in Russia, who came to power after overthrowing her husband Peter, and went on to become the country's longest-ruling female leader.

Season one concluded with Catherine issuing the order to continue with the coup over her husband - played by Nicholas Hoult - and sacrificing her one love Leo in the process, and season two kicked off with the pair in a stalemate and Peter refusing to leave the Palace.

However, a transfer of power finally occurred with Peter demanding that in return he be placed under house arrest and have a meal with Catherine and their unborn child every day.

Elle and Nicholas will return as Catherine and Peter

Catherine agreed - and on the signing on his abdication, he gifted Catherine a bag containing Leo's severed head.

Season two also saw The Crown star Gillian Anderson join the cast as Joanna, Catherine's mother. As per Deadline: "[Joanna] has heard rumors of her daughter's coup and come to Russia to see it for herself.

"Though the apple of Catherine's eye and a doting mother, it soon becomes clear Joanna has more sinister intentions to save her family's reputation."

Elle confirmed the news of season three with fans

Speaking to Decider in 2021, the show's executive producer Marian Macgowan revealed that they have six seasons mapped out for the show.

Showrunner, Tony McNamara - whose play the TV show is based on - added: "I mean we could tell it in four [seasons], we could probably tell it in three. I don’t really know. I think it’s also now I realize the characters are so great across the board – we have 12 great actors playing really great characters and that’s just good TV, so it does seem like there’s a lot to get out of them."

The Great is streaming now on Hulu
