Unforgotten aired its penultimate episode Monday evening and unsurprisingly it was full of major new developments in the case of Precious Falade, and it seems fans watching at home were left shocked by the fifth episode's "twists and turns."

Warning! Potential spoilers ahead…

Episode five of series five saw DI Sunny Khan (Sanjeev Bhaskar) and DCI Jessica James (Sinéad Keenan) put their previous tension behind them and vow to work together to solve the murder case.

Unforgotten returned for series five with a new lead detective

Towards the end of the episode, however, the investigators were shocked to learn that Joseph Bell, who was brought into police custody for questioning, revealed himself to be his half-brother, Jay, the son of Precious, and that Joe was killed by "people out there."

It was this revelation that left viewers at home shocked. One person tweeted after watching Monday's episode: "#Unforgotten more twists than a tornado. Loving it."

Unforgotten's finale will air next Monday

A second added: "It wasn't looking good for Bele or Jay… so much unexpected twists coming to light!" A third continued: "So good two deaths now mother & son. Many twists tonight, omg final episode is next week, we are closer to the truth now. #unforgottenfive."

A fourth was also full of praise for the episode: "#Unforgotten is building up to an excellent final episode next week, layered story with great acting, particularly the actor playing J."

It's clear that series five has gone down a treat with fans, so will the show be back for a sixth series? ITV is yet to confirm whether Unforgotten will be back for more episodes in the future. However, given its popularity, plus Sinéad Keenan joining the cast for the new season, it's certainly likely.

Fans were gripped by the penultimate episode

Not only that, the creator behind the show, Chris Lang, has revealed that, if given the green light, he'd be up for penning a new script.

He told Radio Times: "Certainly, if they asked me, I'd do a season six. I've got a season 6 in my head. So yeah, it's down to the broadcaster, whether they asked me to do it."
