Nathan Fillion has been inundated with messages and comments from fans after The Rookie star shared a photo of him enjoying a well-earned break.

The actor, who is adored for his role as John Nolan in the ABC police procedural drama, posted a selfie to his Instagram from his gorgeous holiday in Thailand for his recent birthday celebrations – and we're loving how he managed to extend the special occasion.

"I discovered a way to make my birthday last longer," Nathan began in the caption, adding: "I crossed the international dateline and celebrated my birthday today in Thailand, and tomorrow I'll receive well wishes from everyone who is still in yesterday. I beat the system."

The photo showed Nathan – who recently shared a clip of him reuniting with a former Castle co-star, shown in the video below – smiling for the camera as he sat underneath a woven parasol as the stunning blue ocean shore and white sandy beach could be seen in the background.

Fans were quick to heap messages on Nathan's page. Actor Justin Long left a funny comment referring to Nathan's extended birthday: "Happy Birthday! Again! Hope this one was better than yesterday's."

A second fan wrote: "Don't you know the unwritten rule? From the age of 41, you get to celebrate the whole week. With every decade, you get an extra day. But I like your thinking. Pity Australia is so far from anything, you lose any time difference in travel."

Nathan's enviable trip abroad comes shortly after the 52-year-old shared a sweet video alongside his former Castle co-star, Seamus Dever, to mark his birthday and getting older. "As I grow older, I notice time moves differently. Much faster than it did when I was a lad.

"It reminds me to appreciate what is really important, to live in the moment when times are good, and to change the moment when they aren't."
