Chicago Fire fans were overcome with emotion watching Wednesday night's episode as the drama welcomed back a familiar face.
Jesse Spencer, known and adored for his role as Matthew Casey on the NBC series, made his return to Firehouse 51 and look thrilled to be back with his old work colleagues and friends.
Matthew Casey left Chicago to head to Oregon, with Jesse waving goodbye the show in 2021 after 200 episodes. Casey, as he's known to viewers, was a fan favorite so it's no wonder that fans took to social media to share their emotions over seeing him back on their screens.
One person wrote: "I have to say it was the best episode in a very long time. Matt Casey is the heart of FH 51. I miss him a lot and it's not just because of Brettsey." A second said: "My jaw dropped when Casey returned to #ChicagoFire!!!!" As a third tweeted: "So good to see Casey back even for just one episode but it's also so weird not to see him with Severide," followed by crying-face emoji.

A fourth joked: "I don't care if Jesse Spencer wants the firstborn of every executive at NBC. Give it to him. Give him whatever he wants if that means Matt Casey comes home to Firehouse 51. #chicagofire."
Viewers were particularly loving the reunion between Casey and Sylvie Brett (Kara Kilmer) or 'Brettsey' as they're known to fans.
While many may assume that Casey is returning amid Severide's absence following Taylor Kinney's temporary exit from the show, it seems as if he actually returned to help another firefighter.
The synopsis for the episode read: "A familiar face returns to Firehouse 51 to serve with Kidd on a special task force; with Tony close to breaking the CFD's perfect attendance record, Mouch and Capp work to keep him safe; old grudges resurface when Gallo reunites with a family member."
