Hugh Laurie's new drama, Why Didn't They Ask Evans?, concluded on ITV on Tuesday evening and viewers were left a little confused by the ending.

The three-part series, which is adapted from Agatha Christie's 1934 detective novel of the same name, follows two childhood friends, Bobby (Will Poulter) and Frankie (Lucy Boynton), as they investigate the cryptic final words of a dying man: 'Why didn't they ask Evans?'.

The ending saw Bobby and Frankie get to the bottom of the crime, discovering the identity of the dead man and the person who killed him.

[Spoiler alert]

In the end, the dead body was revealed to be Alan Carstairs, a friend of millionaire John Savage. Dr Nicholson's wife, Moira, had seduced John while pretending to be called Rose Templeton. After convincing him that he was terminally ill with cancer, she eventually killed him using chloral hydrate in the hopes of inheriting his money.

However, John hadn't changed his will, so Moira had a new one signed and enlisted the help of Roger Bassington-ffrench to impersonate the millionaire. They needed two witnesses so that the new will would be legally binding. They chose the cook and the gardener, assuming neither of them would know what John Savage looked like, rather than the parlormaid, Gladys Evans, who was familiar with John and would be the obvious choice.

When Carstairs heard about the will, he grew suspicious and wondered why John wouldn't have asked Evans to be a witness. As he arrived in the village where Evans lived, he was pushed off the cliff by a man named Mr Angel, who had been hired by Moira to kill Carstairs.

Taking to Twitter, viewers express their confusion, with one person writing: "I really enjoyed #WhyDidntTheyAskEvans but it was a bit confusing and detailed at the end," while another added: "#WhyDidntTheyAskEvans very enjoyable throughout (even if we did lose the thread a bit at the end!), nimble and funny, very engaging cast, and looked lovely and summery on this cold, windy night - more please, ITV!"

Other fans, however, praised the series. One person tweeted: "Just finished watching #WhyDidntTheyAskEvans - excellent, one of my favourite adaptations for a long time," while another wrote: "Really enjoyed Why Didn't They Ask Evans? Well directed and written by Hugh Laurie that felt like a proper Agatha Christie mystery that wrongfooted me a few times. Will Poulter and Lucy Boynton had really good chemistry and made for compelling leads."
