David Muir's emotional homecoming revealed

The 20/20 host has been in war-ravaged Sudan

David Muir shared an emotional homecoming on Sunday after the 20/20 host was posted to report in war-ravaged South Sudan recently. 

Alongside pictures of himself at the location, David wrote: “We’re on our way back from South Sudan. A region battered by war and hunger - and now millions are fighting to survive a changing climate. 

“While we were there, the fighting to the north in Sudan, which will undoubtedly affect relief efforts. Our reporting this week on @abcworldnewstonight - see you tomorrow night. Grateful to the team on the ground with me.”

His fans expressed their gratitude for David always being “on the ground” to cover challenging moments. 

Wrote one fan: “You put yourself in harms way to go to these places and share news with the world . Amazing job you do. Stay safe and we enjoy your coverage.”

It comes after David visited the area of Rolling Fork, a city and county seat of Sharkey County, Mississippi, which was hit by deadly storms, and met a local called Erwin Macon who told David: "I'm still smiling a little, because I’m still here. Despite losing that stuff, I’m still here."

"I won’t forget Erwin Macon and his suitcase," David captioned a picture iif Erwin with his suitcase of final belongings, walking through the devastated neighborhood. "Let’s not forget the need in Rolling Fork, Mississippi and beyond. @americanredcross is on the ground. @abcworldnewstonight," he added.

ABC's Ginger Zee commented: "Agree - let’s not forget them - it takes years. Thank you for this post."

David visited Mississippi in the days after the storms, which saw 21 tornadoes touch down in the state. Covering the devastation caused by the natural disasters for ABC News, he shared a photograph that saw him touching down in Jackson, Mississippi on March 28.
