The renewal announcement will come as no surprise as the series, which stars Nathan Fillion, is in the Top 5 of ABC's most-viewed scripted series.
The exciting news comes as The Rookie returns from its brief hiatus, with a new episode scheduled to air on Tuesday 18 April.
The upcoming episode, titled S.T.R., will see the dramatic return of Tim Bradford's (Eric Winter) ex-wife Isabel (Mircea Monroe).
"Isabel, she's in town and needed to talk," he tells Lucy (Melissa O'Neill) in a teaser, which leaves her feeling "weird" about the situation. Meanwhile, Skip Tracer Randy (Flula Borg) is in for a bumpy ride after he's supposedly framed for two brutal murders, leaving John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) and Nyla Harper (Mekia Cox) to investigate. While fans will be glad to hear of the show's season six renewal, they are now waiting on ABC to reveal whether the spin-off drama, The Rookie: Feds, will also return.
Taking to Twitter, one person wrote: "Ayyy this is Great News! Now we need Rookie Feds to return for season two," while another added: "YES! So excited to hear that #TheRookie is renewed for season 6! Now we need that #RookieFeds spinoff to come through."
