Alec Baldwin is no longer facing involuntary manslaughter charges after New Mexico prosecutors dropped the case. In October 2021, cinematographer and mom-of-one, Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot by Alec Baldwin on the set of Rust after he fired a prop gun that had not been properly checked. The incident occurred on set in New Mexico and the film's director, Joel Souza, was also injured.
In a statement, Mr. Baldwin’s lawyers, Luke Nikas and Alex Spiro, said: "We are pleased with the decision to dismiss the case against Alec Baldwin and we encourage a proper investigation into the facts and circumstances of this tragic accident." Heather Brewer, a spokeswoman for the district attorney’s office for Santa Fe County, declined to comment.
The case against Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the film’s armorer, remains. She has also been charged with involuntary manslaughter.
Earlier on Thursday April 20 Alec had resumed filming at Yellowstone Film Ranch in Montana.
Rust's on-set tragedy explained
In October 2021, Halyna, 42, was fatally shot by Alec after he fired a prop gun that had not been properly checked. The incident occurred on set in New Mexico and the film's director, Joel Souza, was also injured.
As a result, Halyna's death has inspired calls for gun safety reform on film sets, with the 42-year-old's family filing a lawsuit against Alec and other crew members of the film Rust. They are alleging that her death was caused by irresponsible behavior and cost-cutting.

Now, 18 months after the fatal shooting, Alec has decided to return to the set as both an actor and producer. Meanwhile, Joel Souza, who has since recovered from his injuries, will resume his role as director. He explained that his return is intended to honor the legacy of Halyna Hutchins.
The producers have also confirmed that the scene in which Halyna was accidentally shot, has been completely rewritten.
Rust's legal battles explained
Plans to re-commence filming were established last year after Halyna's widower Matthew Hutchins was made an executive producer on a Rust reboot. The decision was reached in a proposed settlement to a wrongful death lawsuit.
Alec and armorer, Hannah Guiterrez Reed, hac both been charged with involuntary manslaughter over the death of Halyna Hutchins.
0In early May, a two-week preliminary hearing is scheduled to begin in Santa Fe. The hearing will determine whether or not there is sufficient evidence to go to trial.
Meanwhile, Halyna's widower Matthew has approved a documentary about his wife.
