Burnett is perhaps best known for her comedy on The Carol Burnett Show, which aired on CBS from September 1967 to March 1978, for 279 episodes, and again with nine episodes in 1991. The variety show was groundbreaking, and one of the first of its kind for a woman.

In a press release, Jen Neal, executive vice president of live events and specials at NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, said: "It's hard to imagine anyone in television more beloved than Carol Burnett."
