The Crown has reigned supreme since 2016, but it's almost time to say goodbye. Set to conclude with its sixth and final season, the hit Netflix drama will bow out in November, and while it's bittersweet, fans couldn't be more excited to watch the remaining episodes. 

But what do we know about The Crown's final outing? Keep reading for all the details on the plot, cast and release date for season six…

Who stars in The Crown season six? Meet the cast

Much of the cast will stay the same, with Imelda Staunton returning as Queen Elizabeth II and Lesley Manville reprising her role as Princess Margaret, while Jonathan Pryce, Marcia Warren, Olivia Williams, Claudia Harrison and James Murray all back to play Prince Philip, the Queen Mother, Camilla Parker Bowles, Princess Anne and Prince Andrew, respectively. 

Elizabeth Debicki will also return in the role of Princess Diana, alongside Dominic West as Prince Charles and Khalid Abdalla as Dodi Fayed.

There will be some new additions to the line-up too. Teen actor Rufus Kampa will play William at the age of 15, while Ed McVey will portray the prince's later teen and early adult years. Meanwhile, newcomer Meg Bellamy will take on the role of Kate.

The Crown season six release date

The Crown season 6 will premiere on Thursday 16 November, with the first four episodes. The second part will arrive on 14 December.

What to expect from the final season

The new season will begin with the death of Princess Diana in 1997 and will take viewers into the early 2000s, covering Prince William's time at St Andrews University, and the early days of his relationship with Kate Middleton. 

Season 6 will cover Princess Diana's tragic death

The official synopsis promises to cover "a relationship blossoming between Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed before a fateful car journey has devastating consequences.

"The final chapter is told across six episodes (Part 2). Prince William tries to integrate back into life at Eton in the wake of his mother’s death as the monarchy has to ride the wave of public opinion," it continues. 

"As she reaches her Golden Jubilee, the Queen reflects on the future of the monarchy with the marriage of Charles and Camilla and the beginnings of a new Royal fairytale in William and Kate."

Which events are likely to be covered?

The events likely to be covered in the new season include the deaths of Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed, as well as the Queen and Prince Philip's golden wedding anniversary in 1997 and Prince William's romance with Kate Middleton at university.

The series may also feature the deaths of Princess Margaret and the Queen Mother in 2002, the Golden Jubilee, Prince Charles and Camilla's marriage, and Tony Blair's time as Prime Minister following his election in 1997.
